As I prepare to have my first child in May, I’ve been looking into making my home more secure. My wife said we need to install those plugs over the wall sockets, and that is a great idea, but what else could we be doing?
I found these while shopping at Frontgate.com. They are steel cabinets made for the garage, but they have a lock on the outside. While cabinets with doors may not be very convenient because you can’t see into them without opening those doors, check these out.
They have a steel frame with screen doors so you can easily see what is inside before you get the key and open the door. These are especially great for those young boys who like to see what dad is doing in the garage.
This type of cabinet may not be ideal for every cabinet in the garage, but you should always keep spray paint, acetone, paint thinner, and any other potentially hazardous chemicals locked away, and out of reach for curious kids. Lock those doors and protect your kids!
BusinessWeek had a great article about “Man Caves” which your garage can become.

This is just a simple courtesy reminder that you need to replace your smoke detector batteries on a regular interval.
I change mine twice a year. I replace them the first time I have to turn the air conditioner on for the first time, then again when I have to turn the heater on for the first time.
You might want to use a calendar to remind you…New Years and the beginning of summer. Whatever helps you remember, but don’t forget!
Most smoke detectors use 9-volt batteries, so make sure you have a few on hand.

“I remember these from when I was a kid,” my wife remarked. It made me think, shouldn’t we, as a society have come up with a better way of protecting our children from sticking metal objects into light sockets? And on a tangent, why do kids like to stick things into holes like a light socket?
That is when we found these Decora Outlet Covers. They replace those old plugs that you stick in the holes with a plate that you have to open to get anything into the outlet.
If you are like me, you always have to keep those little plugs handy because you pull one out so you can plug something in, then you forget where you set it. These outlet covers solve that problem perfectly!
If you have used these, leave us some feedback!
